Over 20,000 domains registered in new procedure

At 10:10 on Thursday, November 18th, the 20,000th .ee domain was registered after the adoption of the new domain registration procedure. AS Sunorek re-registered the tankstudio.ee and sunorek.ee domains, and the registration application for the latter was number 20,000 in the new domain register.

All domains ending with .ee and registered prior to the 5th of July, 2010, must be re-registered. The client must choose a registrar for domain re-registration and submit the corresponding application to the registrar. The list of registrars is published on the Estonian Internet Foundation website www.eestiinternet.ee in the Registrars section. Re-registration is open until the 5th of January, 2011, and the domains that are not re-registered by this date shall be subject to deletion proceedings.

“The numbers show that re-registration has gained pace in November. I would nevertheless like to stress once again that people should register their domains in good time and not leave it until the end of the year,” said Mirko Haavel, Head of the Operations Department of the Estonian Internet Foundations. “Entries for the domains registered prior to the 5th of July, 2010, contain a lot of imprecise and outdated information, which is why the re-registration procedure may take longer than expected. If you forget to re-register the domain by the deadline, you will no longer be able to access the e-mail addresses and the website itself and that can pose a serious problem to your domain users,” Haavel added.

Raido Tammemäe, Marketing Manager of Sunorek AS: “Although many people in our country tend to postpone things until the last moment, our company has already re-registered the domains. As re-registration means establishing a partnership contact with the registrar, internal coordinating and issuing of authorisations and December is always the busiest time for us, this early re-registration of the domains will allow us in December to focus on other important and urgent matters.”

The Estonian Internet Foundation is the organisation that represents the Estonian Internet Community and manages domain names with the Estonian country code. The Estonian Internet Foundation performs the following tasks: management of Estonian top-level domain names and organisation of their registration, representation of the Estonian Internet Community in the cross-border Internet community, including the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), introduction of rules and fees applicable to domain names with the Estonian country code, keeping domain name information systems and registers and ensuring their availability, reliability and security.

The new domain registration procedure was launched on the 5th of July, 2010, and it allows registration of second-level .ee domains by private persons, too. One person can register several domains and now foreigners can also register .ee domains. Registration services are provided by accredited registrars and their list is published on the Estonian Internet Foundation website. The transition period began on the 5th of July, 2010, for all domains registered prior to that date, in accordance with the old rules and the deadline is January 5th, 2011. During this period the persons who registered the domains must choose a registrar with whom to re-register the domain, i.e. renew its registration.
