The Hearts of the Baltic Domain Markets
Estonia: The CoolEST Digital Nation
Estonia is often called the world’s most digital country. And for good reason. You can do almost anything online: get married, sign documents, check your health data, or even report a crime. All this is possible through the national eesti.ee app, which keeps the whole country connected.
Heiki Sibul from the Estonian Internet Foundation explained that this digital success doesn’t happen by accident. It’s a team effort - between citizens, the government, and many partners like the police, CERT-EE, and the Consumer Protection Authority. Together, they keep Estonia’s online space safe and trustworthy.
The .ee domain registry is always improving. The team is working on a solution in collaboration with the e-business registry to offer the opportunity to reserve and register domains while establishing their businesses online. The Foundation also launched a brand new co-marketing program to help .ee registrars promote long-term registrations and encourage businesses to use their domains for websites and emails. At the same time, .ee also keeps its prices fair: the wholesale cost of the .ee domain remains €6, the same as it did back in 2017. The registry has made domains easier to protect, cheaper to dispute, and even earned an ISO 27001:2022 security certification. The team is also moving their systems to the cloud and celebrating the first profitable year of the eeID service.
As the CEO of the .ee registry put it, “building a digital nation is a team sport.” Estonia’s .ee continues to lead by example: secure, smart, and proudly local.
Latvia: Growing with Trust and Innovation
Katrīna Sataki from NIC.lv showed that Latvia’s digital heart beats strongly as well. Latvia is famous for its rivers, lakes, and beautiful Art Nouveau buildings, and also for its reliable .lv domain space.
There are over 142,000 .lv domain names - a number that continues to grow despite the overall trend of decline in the European market. In 2025, Latvia’s registry saw a 1% increase, and the renewal rate reached nearly 82%, higher than ever before. The most active month for new registrations was July, showing that digital ideas bloom even in the summer.
NIC.lv is proud of its 100% service reliability and a 90% customer satisfaction rate. It offers modern services like a DNS firewall in cooperation with CERT.LV and a WIPO dispute resolution system.
Interestingly, most domain owners in Latvia are between 29 and 44 years old. Younger generations are slowly joining in, while older entrepreneurs remain steady and loyal users of .lv. Looking ahead, NIC.lv aims to make registration even easier, improve customer experience, and boost efficiency, proving that when trust and service quality come first, growth follows naturally.
Lithuania: A Strong and Secure .LT
From Lithuania, Tomas Mackus of DOMREG.LT shared how the country’s domain registry keeps evolving. Managed by Kaunas University of Technology, DOMREG combines academic precision with modern digital thinking.
In 2025, Lithuania’s .lt domain space reached 247,000 registrations, growing by 3.4%. The renewal rate stayed solid at 86%, showing that most users keep their domains for the long term.
Security and innovation are big priorities. The number of domains protected by DNSSEC rose by 10%, and more people have started using internationalized domain names (IDNs). DOMREG is also introducing a non-judicial mediation service to make solving domain disputes faster and simpler.
Lithuania is already preparing for new NIS2 cybersecurity rules, focusing on supply chain safety and stronger requirements for all registrars and DNS providers. DOMREG doesn’t just manage domains - the registry is also putting emphasis on DNS education. The team runs programs for students, small businesses, and even law enforcement to improve cyber awareness and digital literacy. With these efforts, Lithuania shows that the key to a strong digital future lies in knowledge, trust, and collaboration.
