.EE on the Rise: Trends, Growth, and What’s Next
While new registrations are rising, the number of expiring domains has also gone up. These are domain names that users did not renew and are now being sent to domain auctions. In the second quarter, a total of 9,227 names were released through auctions. Of those, 3.79% were successfully sold and taken over by new owners.
The Estonian top-level domain is also becoming more popular internationally. At the end of the last quarter, 34.23% of .ee domain owners were from outside Estonia. This growing number of foreign registrants is also reflected in the domain names themselves. More and more domains now include English words, showing that Estonia’s internet is becoming more international and multilingual.
Trends in .EE Domain Names
Domain names offer insight into what new businesses are doing and the services they provide. Looking at newly registered domains, it’s clear that AI and related keywords have made a major jump. This shows that many Estonian companies are now moving into this fast-growing field.
Other popular keywords include “Tallinn” and “abi” (help), which also saw noticeable growth. On the other hand, interest in keywords related to electricity and the green sector, which were trending last year, has decreased. Surprisingly, keywords related to weddings, events, and other celebrations, which usually pick up during summer, are not seeing the same interest this year.
The largest number of .ee domain owners are aged 44, and 77.9% of all .ee owners are men. Most domains are registered for business purposes, with 58.9% of registrants being legal entities like companies. Interestingly, just over 4,400 .ee domains contain full stops in the domain name.

Domain Dispute Fee Is Being Lowered
A big change is coming to the Estonian internet and the .ee domain world. Starting September 1, the fees for domain disputes will be reduced for private individuals and non-profit organizations.
The current fee of €690 will drop to €390 for individuals and non-profits.
For companies, the new fee will be €790.
This new pricing model is meant to make it easier for people and small organizations to access legal protection related to .ee domains. The model was designed using best practices from other countries that already use differentiated pricing. The goal is to improve access, prevent bad-faith domain registrations, and make the Estonian internet safer and more trustworthy.
The Domain Disputes Commission handles about ten cases per year. Over its 15-year history, it has ruled on several high-profile domain names, including wolt.ee, nike.ee, puma.ee, starbucks.ee, and many others. You can read the Commission’s rules at: https://www.internet.ee/domain-disputes.
