AI, Auto and 24 Lead the Latest .ee Domain Trends
By the end of the third quarter, there were 28,506 more .ee domains than in the same period last year. This means that nearly 25,000 new .ee domain names have been added during the first nine months of this year.
Most registrations in August, most renewals in September
The highest number of new domains was registered in August, with July close behind. Domain registration activity slowed somewhat in the third quarter, but this was largely due to the exceptionally high comparison base in the second quarter. Even so, this year’s results show that interest in the .ee domain remains strong.
Alongside new registrations, it is also important to look at the renewal rate. In the third quarter, 4.8% more domains were renewed than a year earlier. This means that more than eight out of ten registrations were renewed: the vast majority of registered .ee domains remain in use. The renewal rate also contributes to the overall growth of the .ee zone.
Domain name trends
The words used in newly registered domain names provide insight into the fields in which new Estonian businesses are operating.
“Auto” remains the most popular keyword, appearing 94 times in domain names registered during the third quarter. It is followed by “24” and “AI”. The top three have remained unchanged, highlighting the continued popularity of names related to cars and round-the-clock services. We can also see that AI-related service providers have established a strong presence in the business landscape.
A new entry, “studio”, climbed to fifth place, reinforcing an already familiar trend: Estonian companies often prefer English-language names. “Tallinn” was the only city to make it into the top ten. At the same time, practical words that clearly indicate a company’s area of activity remain popular year after year, including “ehitus” (construction), “rent”, “kodu” (home), and “abi” (help). These words give website visitors a quick idea of the type of service or solution being offered simply from the domain name.
The top ten words used in .ee domain names registered in the third quarter were:
- auto
- 24
- AI
- Eesti
- studio
- ehitus
- rent
- kodu
- abi
- Tallinn
Competition for strong domain names is growing
The rapid growth of .ee domains confirms that the .ee domain plays an important role in protecting company names, brands, and other identities online in Estonia. At the same time, competition for short, clear, and memorable names is also increasing.
A domain name should therefore be considered one of the first steps in building a company or brand. Registration does not need to wait until the website is ready, but should instead be part of the company formation process. Securing a .ee name has now also become more convenient for new entrepreneurs, as company and brand names can be reserved through the Estonian e-Business Register.

Starting a company? You can now reserve your .ee domain at the same time
The Estonian Internet Foundation (EIF) and the Centre of Registers and Information Systems (RIK) have added two new services to the e-Business Register that allow entrepreneurs to reserve or book a .ee domain name already during the company formation process. The solution helps entrepreneurs think about registering their .ee domain name right from the start, and avoid problems in situations where a company's name is already public in the Business Register but the matching .ee domain has not yet been registered.
